AWECC Chairperson Sue Portors, has this week written to federal member for Indi, Ms Cathy McGowan AO MP, asking for her continued support for the multicultural communities of the Border and North East as she continues to negotiate with Australia's new Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison, and his government.

The Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council (AWECC) has an upcoming opportunity for a young person from a refugee background to complete a one-day per week, three-month summer internship with its community advocacy team. The successful intern will commence in early November 2018 and will be required to attend and actively participate in the Emerging Leaders’ Summit in Beechworth Victoria between the 8th to 11th November 2018 (valued at $1500).
Albury-Wodonga Ethnic Communities Council is currently seeking Expressions of Interest for members to join its seven-member volunteer Board. Board meetings are held after business hours each month, in Albury or Wodonga. Expressions of interest need to be submitted no later than 5pm on 29 September 2018. Ayyagari 7 August 2018 In response to Andrew Bolt’s inflammatory article in the Daily Telegraph on Thursday 2nd August 2018 titled “Foreign Invasion”, I would like to make a few comments to dispel some of the distorted and biased opinions. Join Professor Andrew Markus (Monash University), author of the annual Scanlon Foundation social cohesion reports, as he presents key findings from the latest national survey at a public presentation in Albury-Wodonga. Professor Markus will share insights about Australia's growing ethnic diversity, including contemporary social issues such as immigration, discrimination and multiculturalism. He will also discuss the current balance of Australian opinion towards multiculturalism and common factors that enhance (or erode)community harmony. A suite of communication resources have been developed by the Victoria Department of Health & Human Services to encourage and educate individuals and the community to be aware of the impact of extreme heat on human health. The information is available in a range of formats with a number of resources translated into community languages. The Victorian Government is offering scholarships to students who are accepted into the 2018 Diploma of Interpreting or Advanced Diploma of Interpreting at RMIT University to study interpreting in a range of community languages. The RMIT diplomas are suitable for bilingual people who are seeking to learn or develop professional interpreting techniques. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents, although applications from asylum seekers will also be considered. Building a New Life in Australia: A Longitudinal Study of Humanitarian Migrants is a long term project researching how humanitarian migrants settle into life in Australia. It is the first long-term study of humanitarian migrants to Australia and to date has released data from the first three waves.
