AWECC has committed to become a supporter of the Welcoming Cities Network. Welcoming Cities is a global movement which supports local governments to advance communities where everyone can belong and participate in social, cultural, economic and civic life. Welcoming Cities is part of a growing network of more than 135 municipalities, and many more supporting organisations, around the world. As a supporter, AWECC has committed to supporting local councils in welcoming and inclusion initiatives. Here is the commitment statement we have signed.

AWECC has urged Federal Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan, to back the refugee rights bill that is being tabled next month in Parliament. The legislation, if passed, would allow for fast-tracking of medical treatment to refugees in Australia's offshore detention camps in Manus Island and Nauru. Here is a copy of the letter sent to Ms McGowan.
AWECC Chairperson, Ms Rupinder Kaur has been named Wodonga's 'Citizen of the Year' for 2019. Ms Kaur, who arrived in Australia from India in 2007, has been recognised for her tireless efforts in supporting survivors of domestic violence and in her volunteer service to the Wodonga community. Ms Kaur will receive her award at an Australia Day ceremony in Wodonga on 26 January. Rupinder follows former AWECC Chairperson Teju Chouhan, who was honoured with the same award in 2017. AWECC has awarded Sylva Mwala with a sponsorship to attend The Mandala Project Emerging Leaders Summit this November in Beechworth, Victoria. Sylva, who is currently completing a Diploma of Community Services at Wodonga TAFE, will also undertake a part-time internship with AWECC to apply his newly acquired skills.
Today, AWECC received a letter from Federal Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan AO MP, advising that she has made representation to the Prime Minister on behalf of AWECC's members and communities. This is in response to concerns raised by AWECC Chairperson, Sue Portors, over the political instability at the federal level, rising anti-migrant sentiment in some parts of Australian society, and the impacts to our local community. AWECC has been successful in its bid to fund its 'Multicultural Seniors LINK' program for 2018-2019! The Victorian Government's Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) this week confirmed it will grant $10,000 to AWECC to fund the program through its 'Participation for CALD Seniors Grant' program.
